Frank Zappa's “Apostrophe ('),” released in 1974, is one of his most commercially successful albums. It blends Zappa's signature avant-garde rock with elements of jazz fusion and comedic storytelling, showcasing his unique blend of complex musicianship and satirical humor. The album features the hit single "Don't Eat the Yellow Snow," a surreal, multi-part suite that became one of Zappa's most recognizable works.
The album highlights Zappa's skillful guitar work, as well as his ability to fuse intricate musical arrangements with absurdist lyrics. Themes range from humorous tales of Eskimos and mysticism to critiques of American culture, delivered with Zappa's characteristic irreverence. The album's mix of playful humor and technical brilliance earned it a wide audience, and it remains a standout in Zappa's vast discography. Notably, Apostrophe (') reached No. 10 on the Billboard 200, making it Zappa's highest-charting album in the U.S.
Those chart popping rankings are just one of the many reasons it received a quadrophonic mix back in the day, and of greater importance has now received a reissue on Blu-ray which includes remastered versions of both the original stereo mix and quadrophonic mix, plus new 2024 Dolby Atmos and 5.1 surround mixes handled by Karma Auger and Erich Gobel. Now the third in a series of box set reissues, Apostrophe (‘) has become an expansive celebration of one of his most beloved albums. Beyond the Blu-ray, the set includes five CDs featuring the original 1974 album newly remastered by Bernie Grundman. In addition, these CDs also contain nine session outtakes, bonus tracks, and two live concerts from 1974, recorded in Colorado Springs and Dayton, Ohio.
The box set also includes a 52-page booklet with extensive liner notes, historical essays, and previously unseen photographs, giving fans an in-depth look at the creation of the album. This collection not only preserves the legacy of Apostrophe (') but also offers a fresh, immersive listening experience for new and longtime Zappa fans alike.
Absolutely recommended for fans of Frank Zappa, collectors of classic quad, and immersionists seeking enticing Dolby Atmos mixes.
