Yes - Fragile Super Deluxe

Some are wondering if Yes is back on the remix campaign, updating their earlier albums to include Dolby Atmos mixes. These thoughts follow as Fragile has become the second album to receive the revamped Super Deluxe treatment, once again thanks to the expert engineering by Steven Wilson. However, this time around, the label has upped the ante by locking the spatial mix into a box that contains vinyl and multiple compact discs. In short, this new edition is the definitive edition, and unless they put the band in your house through some AI virtual reality experience, this 2024 edition is the one to own now.

Looking back, two very good multi-channel 5.1 mixes have already been created with the earliest one available on a DVD-Audio disc released in 2002, and then in 2015 an updated mini gatefold replica package with either a choice of a DVD or Blu-ray featuring reimagined mixes by Steven Wilson. This 2024 Blu-ray is effectively a refinement of the 5.1 surround mixes and an expansion into Dolby Atmos.

The Super Deluxe Edition of Fragile is Packaged just like the super deluxe edition of “The Yes Album” released in lates 2023, and is housed in a thin box, which may be best described as a very thick vinyl album package. It is a smidge larger than a standard vinyl cover and reminds me of the classical vinyl box releases back in the day. But, the difference is this is a book design, with the vinyl disc on left side along with the Blu-ray slipped into a separate cardboard sleeve that is glued to that same side. The remaining four compact discs are all housed on the right side and secured with a center button for each disc.

Across the 4 CDs fans will find the original album remastered on disc 1, the Steven Wilson 2024 remixes and instrumentals on disc 2, a bunch of rarities on disc 3, and even more rarities and live recordings across disc 4. The set also contains a vinyl LP of the original analog version of the album, and these lacquers were cut by renowned audio engineer Bernie Grundman.

Of main interest to readers here is the Blu-ray disc featuring all new mixes by Steven Wilson of the album in the following formats. Dolby Atmos mix, an all-new 5.1 surround sound DTS-HD Master Audio mix at 96kHz / 24-bit, and all new Stereo remix at 96kHz / 24-bit, plus instrumental versions of the new stereo mix too, plus a 2024 stereo remaster of the original album mix at 192kHz / 24-bit.

Yes Fragile unpacked.Without getting deeply into the details, I will just say that the Dolby Atmos mix by far is the definitive version of Fragile, and truly does take the album to new heights. The top speakers are judiciously used for vocals and backing parts, while the surround and back channels power up with the progressive magic of Yes. Some of the issues that were present in the 2015 surround mix have been cleaned up, breathing new sonic life into this over half century old masterpiece. For audiophiles of any type, there is a version for you, which truly makes this super deluxe edition much more compelling. While I do still wish for a standalone Blu-ray, Fragile has been lovingly presented for collectors and fans in what I believe to be the final edition that anyone will need to purchase of this classic album.
