The Alan Parsons Project - The Turn of a Friendly Card

Continuing to release theme-based albums, The Alan Parsons Project focused on the temptation of gambling and its impact on human nature on their 1980 release “The Turn of a Friendly Card.” Featuring classic tracks such as "Games People Play," with singer Lenny Zakatek, and "Time," featuring Eric Woolfson on vocals, plus the album's instrumental, "The Gold Bug," which reflects the tempo and overall concept of the album.

Now in February 2023, a new deluxe edition of the album that contains three CDs and a region-free Blu-Ray disc featuring a new 5.1 surround sound mix by Alan Parsons and a high-resolution remastered original stereo mix has hit the streets. Additionally, this deluxe set includes 42 tracks drawn from Eric Woolfson's songwriting diaries plus studio session out-takes. The set also features promotional videos of "Games People Play," "The Gold Bug," and "The Turn of a Friendly Card," along with a television advertisement. The set also comes with a lavish illustrated book that contains a new essay with photos, memorabilia, and recollections from Alan Parsons and Sally Woolfson. The book also includes a reproduction poster.

The deluxe edition is a must-have for all in fans of The Alan Parsons Project and offers many bonuses that give one an opportunity to hear the album in a new light. However, there is also a standalone Blu-ray that is scheduled for release in May 2023, and that is the edition that will be reviewed here, as it will contain the album mixed in surround along with the hi-res remastered original mix.

Turn of a Friendly Card was recorded in Paris and features the contribution of musicians such as Ian Bairnson, David Paton, Stuart Elliott, and Eric Woolfson. It became one of the biggest selling albums for The Alan Parsons Project, achieving gold status in many European countries and the USA. The Turn of a Friendly Card remains one of the group's most enjoyable albums and is an excellent addition to any music collection. Fans of progressive rock and surround mixes will surely want to get their copy, either as a deluxe or stand-alone edition.

Deluxe Edition released February 24, 2023.
Stand-alone Bluray scheduled for release May 26, 2023.
