Most audiophile immersionists will easily agree that Steven Wilson has long been one of the masters of 5.1 surround. Now, a few years after completing his Dolby Atmos studio, he has quickly become one of the most sought-after spatial audio engineers. While he has already released new Atmos mixes for several previously released 5.1 surround albums for other artists, his 2012 project with Mikael Akerfeldt (Opeth) titled โStorm Corrosionโ now is getting the upgrade treatment too.
Having enjoyed both The Yes Album and Fragile in Atmos, along with the updated King Crimson releases among others, plus I can already attest that the sound quality of Storm Corrosion is exceptional, thus I can only imagine what new aural excellence Wilson has pulled out of his hat for this release. The 5.1 is wide and provides an open space where synths, guitars, vocals, and the like fall around the listener. Add in the height channels, and this album is certain to enjoy a new dimension. In my previous review I noted that the dynamics are deep and as each song evolves the listener becomes further immersed by the music. Wilson has commented that by the nature of the technical design, Dolby Atmos serves to elevate the dynamics, which audiophiles likely will agree is one of the most important factors in sound reproduction. Sounds like a win-win for the Storm Corrosion album to me!
This 2024 10th Anniversary Edition on Blu-ray contains a new Dolby Atmos mix, and a DTS HD Master Audio 5.1 surround mix (vintage unknown at present), also the Blu-ray contains hi-res stereo mixes plus instrumental mixes of each track. Fans will also find a mini album documentary, the promo video for the track 'Drag Ropes', alongside two demo versions, plus a newly mixed live recording of 'Drag Ropes' from The Royal Albert Hall in 2015 when Akerfeldt guested at one of Wilsonโs solo concerts.
