John Luther Adams’ Become Desert is a remarkable expansion on the ideas he developed for his Pulitzer-winning (and Grammy-winning) work Become Ocean. Although this latest release is not necessarily a sequel, the recording does shares multiple elements with its predecessor, including the renewal of Adams’ creative partnership with conductor Ludovic Morlot and the Seattle Symphony.
Become Desert conveys a sense of “swimming in light”. Wherein listeners begin to feel that the music suspends you in time while slowly leading you somewhere. It continues upward, rising with inevitable force, similar to the wind or the light.”
The delightful news is the second disc in this 2-disc edition is a DVD which includes a 5.1 surround mix of the album, along with a slideshow of desert still photo images by John Luther Adams that loop during playback. Additionally, the production team behind Become Desert has partnered with Dolby Laboratories to create a Dolby Atmos mix, which is available via Acoustic Sounds and other HD retailers.
