On her earliest albums, Nanci Griffith was more folk than country. I first heard her during a live performance at the well-regarded Clearwater Festival along the Hudson in New York State where the future Country Star found an early audience. On her debut “There is a Light Beyond these Woods,” her silky voice and gentle guitar takes listeners into a mesmerizing space, which is perfect listening while you are patiently waiting for rescue from the desert island.
Her story telling, is elevated by the pristine recording heard on this Rounder Records CD. Her later albums moved into country music, gaining her international recognition that she deserved. Many of these later albums are gems, yet this debut album remains the most remarkable in tone and conviction, making it an absolute must have for any Desert Island Collection.
