Genesis - The Lamb Lies Down on BroadwayThe Lamb Lies Down on Broadway became the only full-fledged concept album from Genesis, and is often considered the pinnacle release by the English based band. The massive rock opera with its wielding story of a Puerto Rican hustler name Rael who makes his way in New York City developed by Peter Gabriel. The original vinyl release came with a lengthy libretto, and while the story doesn’t seem to makes sense. The music is forceful and imaginative showcasing the original Genesis lineup at their peak. The first LP is devoted to progressive-rock songs with a pop leaning while the second LP largely is devoted to instrumental progressive rock montages. Essentially The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway contains both a direct Genesis’ rock side along with the impressionistic masterpieces found on the second half. This album is a lasting achievement that the band could never top again. It has been remixed in multi-channel 5. 1 surround, made available on both SACD and DVD back in 2009, some 35 years after its original release. That ideally is the version to spin on your Desert Island, but a Vinyl or Compact Disc copy will suffice in a pinch, better check the space in your travel chest, this is certainly one not to miss.

Yes, what an album. While the story is convoluted (even the title - though still evocative), there are wonderful narrative moments and terrific images throughout, and the music itself is brilliant from start to finish. At the time, no one thought they could top Selling England by the Pound, and then they gave the world this. Wonderful 5.1 too.
