Clockwork was one of the first ensemble albums on the Windham Hill label, taking the new age genre into a broader definition, really defining the acoustic based sound over the next several years. Alex de Grassi proved that he had become one of his generations finest guitarists, collaborating with players that brought a technical and lyrical deftness to his music. There is a musical interplay that creates a rhythmic precision that is measured out just like the title implies. As always, the quality of the recording is excellent, and although Clockwork can be hard to find, it is this and other early Windham Hill albums that gave birth to the New Age genre, making this a release that any Desert Island Collection should have.
